Freshman year
My DSP essay landed me in the remedial section of freshman writing. Looking back, I am pretty sure the prompt asked us to analyze the argument and I instead took a stance on the argument. I enrolled in 125 anyway. Here, I selected my argumentative essay from 125 about virtual schools. In this piece, we were actually supposed to take a stance, which I did and a hard-line one at that. This piece specifically forced me to learn that any piece of effective argumentative writing has to address the counterpoints; in other words, discover the opposing viewpoints. It is easy to have an opinion on something and find literature to reinforce your own opinion. It is not easy to find literature that refutes your stance.
In my concentration writing literature review from MVS 313 second semester, there was a large departure from the writing asked of me in 125. However, I was still a freshman and the same narrow scope I presented in my 125 piece is evident in my lit review. I was not able to construct a review that connected and introduced contributing or conflicting areas of research. I kept my scope very focused, which for being a freshman and learning about my topic as I went along, may have been necessary to actually meet the deadlines.
Besides learning to incorporate opposing viewpoints, I discovered a topic that would fuel a four year investigation and several more papers and projects. Check it out by hovering over the "Freshman Year" tab on the left column menu.
